Growing up in rural Minnesota, Steve learned the importance of doing your part, no matter the season. Living on a farm outside of a small town also taught Steve that making a personal connection with others and sustaining those relationships over the years means everything. Steve co-founded Dicke, Billig and Czaja with those values in mind, believing that quality intellectual property legal services depend upon competence, persistence, and commitment to the cause of each client.
Working with small and large companies to build, maintain and enforce their intellectual property portfolios, Steve is recognized for the extensive patent management experience he brings to clients in a broad range of industries. Honored as a Leading American Attorney, Steve has also been named multiple times as a Super Lawyer by his peers.
Steve focuses his practice on U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, licensing, agreements, opinions, appeals, interference proceedings, Internet and e-commerce law, and other intellectual property work and related business transactions.
Fields in which Steve has significant experience include electronic, electrical, mechanical, and process technologies. He has expertise in computer hardware and software, electrical, medical devices, storage devices, optical and printing technologies, semiconductors, e-commerce and business method technologies.
In the area of foreign patent practice, Steve has substantial experience working with foreign companies to build their intellectual property portfolios in the United States. He also provides infringement, validity and clearance investigations and opinions. He works closely with many law firms in other countries, those in Europe and Asia in particular.
Steve produces DBC’s e-newsletter, IP Updates, in order to inform its readership of recent changes in intellectual property law and to provide helpful practice tips. In addition to educating clients, Steve's approachable style makes him a natural mentor for young intellectual property attorneys.
In his spare time, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, and coaching youth basketball and baseball. Since he no longer has farm work to help him keep in shape, he also works out at the CrossFit Nordeast gym in Minneapolis on a regular basis.
